Different Roofing Materials You Can Choose From

Posted on

When it comes to selecting roofing materials, either for roof restoration or new construction of a home, it is not simply about opting for the cheapest one you come across. Since there is an array of options to choose from, your choice will be dependent on your budget, prevalent weather in your locality, personal preferences, durability of the materials and more. You may also have to consider whether the material can be supported by your roofing frame or not, as some of these materials can be quite heavy. Here are some of the different roofing materials that you can choose from.

Asphalt

One of the most popular options for roofing materials are asphalt shingles. These tend to lie on the lower end of the spectrum when it comes to cost. However, they still afford you some flexibility when it comes to customization as they come in a myriad of colours. The most common option used for roofing are the three tab asphalt shingles. These types of shingles create a uniform appearance as they are cut in the same size. If you are looking for something more creative, you could opt for architectural asphalt shingles. These comes in varying shapes and sizes to create an uneven look on your roof.

Metal

If you decide you would prefer metal for your roofing material, you would have to choose from different types such as zinc, aluminium, copper, tin and steel. Metal is another popular alternative, as these roofs are known for both their durability as well as their longevity. One of the popular design options for metal roofs is the standing seam. These refer to metal panels being joined at the seams to create the roof, rather than shingles.

Tiles

If you were looking for heavy roofing materials, tiles would be your best bet. These roofing materials tend to be quite dense and can be made from of concrete, ceramic, clay, porcelain and a range of other synthetic materials. Tile roofs typically lie on the more expensive end of the financial spectrum. However, this is due to the fact that they tend to be a more durable option as compared to their asphalt and metal counterparts. In addition, their density also increases their longevity, as they are less likely to succumb to regular wear and tear from the weather elements. One thing to note though before resorting to tile roofing is the structural capability of your roofing frame. Some frames may not be able to withstand the weight of these materials, and as such it is best to have a roofing contractor determine if this material would be best suited to your residence.
